Talalay Latex vs. Dunlop Latex

Natural latex, made from the sap of the rubber tree, can be processed in two different ways: Talalay or Dunlop.

Each process creates a natural latex – but which one results in a better material for your mattress?

Dunlop is older, dating back to 1929, but Talalay has taken the Dunlop process and added two additional steps.

The Manufacturing Process

Dunlop Process

1. Thick rubber sap is whipped into froth in a centrifuge

2. Sap is poured into a mold and covered

3. Mold is baked

Talalay Process

1. Thick rubber sap is whipped into froth in a centrifuge

2. Sap is poured into a mold and sealed

3. Air is extracted in a vacuum chamber

4. Mold is flash-frozen to stabilize materials

5. Mold is baked

The Results

Dunlop Latex
Talalay Latex

· Denser than Talalay, making it firmer .  and heavier

· Doesn’t quite “bounce back”

· Smaller cells cause heat retention

· Used in Casper (and their copycats)

· Consistent cell-structure, making it more soft and pillow-like

· Larger cells lead to superior air flow and high performance on impact

· Conforms to your body without sinking into a mattress hole

· Used in PangeaBed™ products

Both processes produce a natural latex, but Talalay involves two more steps than Dunlop to ensure that its latex has consistency, durability and supportive comfort.

But wait - there's MORE!

A couple more key differences that make Talalay far superior than Dunlop is the quality control testing and multi-stage fresh water washing of the product (the only one of its kind in the industry), leading to Talalay's amazing consistency and hypoallergenic claims.

Quality Control Testing

Held to the world’s highest tolerance, every Talalay Latex component is tested in 9 locations to ensure uniform product feel.

Multi-stage Fresh Water Washing

The 100% Pure Talalay Latex within our PangeaBed™ Mattresses and Pillows each go through a multi-stage fresh water washing —the only one of its kind in the industry.

Within the multi-stage self-cleaning washing process, water jets wash away residual soaps, curing agents and proteins. Between each set of jets, the products are squeezed to less than 4% of their total thickness to remove the maximum amount of residual materials from deep within the product. This vital step improves hypoallergenicity by removing residual soaps, curing agents and proteins – therefore supporting the “hypoallergenic” claim and resulting in zero complaints of allergies over the past 30 years for Talalay Latex.

Key Benefits of Talalay Latex:
  • Unsurpassed comfort and superior support
  • Exceptional durability and resiliency
  • Superior breathability for a cooler sleeping environment
  • Unique health benefits
