There are plenty of mattress sizes to choose from for a single sleeper: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California King. However, if you share your bed with a partner, the options are much more limited.
So, what's the best mattress size for couples?
Many years ago, the full-size mattress was perfect for couples, since bedrooms were smaller. A full-size mattress leaves each partner only 27 inches of personal space, which is about the width of a crib—not exactly ideal for a comfortable night's sleep.
What is the Best Mattress Size for Couples?
It's no question the proper choice for a couple is a queen- or king-size mattress. You can never go wrong with more space and comfort, especially if you have pets and/or children. However, choosing between the two can come down to a few factors:
- The Size Of Your Room - Make sure the mattress will comfortably fit into your bedroom.
- Your Budget - The larger the mattress, the more expensive it will be. So keep your budget in mind.
- Your Body Frame - Larger-framed people will generally be more comfortable on larger beds.
- Your Sleeping Preference - Are you and your partner cuddlers or do you like your personal space?
- Your Home - Make sure the mattress will fit through your front door, hallways, and bedroom door (or choose a convenient boxed mattress!).
A queen-size mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, which is 7 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full-size mattress. These extra few inches provide additional comfort for couples who don't have the room for a king-size mattress, or prefer more living space in their bedroom. Interestingly enough, even with 30 inches of personal space, each adult still has 8 inches less than if they were sleeping alone in a twin bed.
If you have a larger-sized bedroom (and a larger-sized budget), you should spring for a king-size mattress. It is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, which is almost the same size as pushing two twin XL beds together. A king offers the most personal space each member within a couple can have while sleeping in the same bed (38 inches). A king-size mattress is the best choice for couples who want the maximum personal sleeping space, and the ability to share the bed with pets.
The California King mattress is another alternative for couples. The mattress is about 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, which is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king. Although it has a smaller width than the traditional king-size mattress, it still provides each sleeper with an additional 6 inches more sleeping width than a queen-size bed. It's therefore perfect for taller couples or couples with more narrow rooms.
You will never regret your decision to buy a more spacious mattress for you and your partner. It will make each night's rest that much more peaceful knowing you can enjoy your personal space or cozy up to your loved one and cuddle.
