How To Compress A Memory Foam Mattress

Transporting a mattress is one of the most daunting tasks when it comes to moving. Most vehicles won’t fit a larger mattress inside, and even flatbed trucks come with the worry of the elements ruining your expensive mattress.

Even if you rent a trailer, a 4×8 trailer only fits a Queen size mattress diagonally through the middle of the trailer, making it almost impossible to put other large furniture inside. A 5×8 trailer will work, but then you have that much less visibility on the road.

If only you knew how to compress a memory foam mattress…

If you own a new memory foam mattress that you just don’t want to part with, you may be in luck. Remember how your bed came in a box? Well, it is actually possible to compress that mattress back to its shippable form.

Have we caught your attention? Want to know more? Keep reading so that you can collect the materials you need in order to roll up the mattress and move to your next adventure.

How To Pack A Memory Foam Mattress

Moving a memory foam mattress can seem like a daunting task, but never fear. Simply collect the items below, and follow our easy step-by-step guide, and you’ll have your mattress moved in no time flat.

Items You Need

Plastic Mattress Bag

You can buy a plastic mattress bag at your local storage unit or UHAUL center relatively inexpensively. Even if you weren’t planning on re-rolling your mattress, you would want to buy a mattress bag for transportation to keep it clean from bugs and potential elements, so this is less of an investment and more of a necessity.

If you have a choice, go for one that has a seal. That is going to make this method a lot easier for you. Furthermore, you want to make sure that you get the right size mattress bag for your bed. Too small won’t work, and too big is going to be difficult to maneuver in the steps below.

Ratchet Straps

You should be able to buy a couple of these very affordably at your local hardware store or a big-box store such as the Home Depot. These are going to help you secure your bed into the role, and keep it that way.

Duct Tape

Make sure to get a low-to-medium grade Duct Tape that isn’t going to be too difficult to work with. We aren’t securing car parts, here. While Duct tape truly can fix everything, it is important not to get one that is so sticky it will rip the mattress bag right open.

Vacuum Bag

What you need here is the valve of the bag. So, you can utilize a free, used mattress bag for this step, or you can buy a cheap one of any size. We are going to repurpose the valve from the bag onto our mattress bag. Make sure that the valve on this bag matches the hose on your vacuum cleaner.

How To Compress A Memory Foam Mattress

Take Off Any Mattress Protectors

While taking off the sheets goes without saying, you may have forgotten about that mattress encasement you purchased. Make sure to go ahead and take that off, and any other bed linens, before you begin.

Put Your Mattress In The Mattress Bag

Putting your mattress in the mattress bag should be a fairly straightforward process. However, if you have a larger mattress, this may take two people to do effectively.

Be sure not to rip the mattress bag at this step, if you do, you will need to make sure the rip is air-tight by using duct tape or another method.

Seal Your Mattress In The Bag

Seal your mattress in the bag, including duct-taping over where the original seal is.

Attach The Valve

Cut a hole in the mattress bag that the valve can fit through, and tape all around to secure. Be sure that the valve is hitting the mattress itself. What you’ve essentially created, here, is a mattress vacuum bag.

Vacuum The Air Out Of The Mattress Bag

Turn your vacuum on! You will see this process begin to work immediately. Have a friend sit on the edges of the mattress to further compress if you are vacuuming from the center of the mattress.

If you have created an air-tight seal and are doing this correctly, you should see the mattress reduce down to a much smaller width.

Roll Your Mattress

Begin to roll your mattress from the thinnest size. It is best to keep the hose attached and on as long as possible during this process so that the mattress does not begin to re-inflate while you are rolling it.

Secure Your Mattress

Using the ratchet straps to hold your mattress together will ensure it doesn’t rapidly inflate in your moving van if the plastic breaks. This is an important step to save yourself some future heartache, so don’t skip it.

Tips And Tricks

Get The Right Bag Size

A bigger bag is just going to give you too much plastic to work with easily. Think about it, the bag fits the mattress at its normal size, you don’t need an even bigger bag in order to compress it.

The More Straps, The Better

While you need at least two Ratchet Straps in order to secure your mattress, using three or four won’t hurt it, and in fact, might help maintain the integrity of the mattress if the plastic does spring a leak and let in some air during transport.

Don’t Fold It

You may be wondering if you can fold a memory foam mattress. The short answer is no.

The longer answer is that folding the mattress is going to cause too sharp of a bend in your mattress which will hurt the memory foam’s integrity and cause it to degrade in certain areas. Compressing and rolling is the way to go.

Foam Only, Please

As a final note, please do not try this method with any innerspring mattresses, including hybrids.

How Much Does A Mattress Weigh

A mattress is one of the most critical things in your bedroom. When you do your research and buy the right mattress, it can greatly elevate your sleeping experience. There are several studies that have shown a mattress does affect how you sleep. An old mattress can also cause your spine to be misaligned at night, leading to back pain and a poor night’s sleep.

Learn more about how much does a mattress weigh on average, and what to consider when looking at the weight of a specific mattress.

When buying a mattress, one thing that a lot of people do not take a look at is the weight. Learning how much a mattress weigh should actually be an important part of the shopping process. The heavier the mattress, the harder it will be to handle – but if it is in the same place for a long time, then weight may not be such a big hassle.

Why Is It Important To Know How Much A Mattress Weighs?

Most people never take a look at the weight of a mattress when they buy this type of furniture. You checked the maximum supported weight of the mattress to ensure it will support your body but never thought that looking at the actual weight of the mattress is important.

A queen size mattress weight, or any other mattress size, does not directly affect its overall quality or how supportive it is. Instead, there are other factors that the weight of the mattress will have an impact on.

Some of the reasons why you might want to consider the weight of a mattress include:

  • When the mattress is delivered, you will need to take it inside and set it up. Whether it is a bed-in-a-box or a standard mattress, the weight tells you just how much effort will be needed to get the mattress into your room. If it weighs a lot, you may need to get someone to help you out. When you know this beforehand, you can ensure that person is close when the delivery company drops the mattress off.
  • When you move furniture in your room or clean your room, the weight of your mattress can also play a role. If the mattress is very heavy, then pushing your bed to a different position can be difficult. It also makes the process of cleaning underneath your bed harder.
  • The foundation you will use with the mattress may also have a maximum supported weight. If the weight of the mattress, along with your own weight, exceeds what the foundation can support, then it can cause issues. This may lead to reduced durability of the mattress foundation. It may also break or become noisy.

How Much Does A Mattress Weigh On Average?

The weight of a mattress depends on a few things. When asking how much does a king size mattress weigh, the answer will be different from a queen size mattress in most cases. With this in mind, the mattress size is one of the first things to consider when looking at the weight.

It is not only the size of the mattress that contributes to its weight, however. The materials that are used inside the mattress also affects how much it will weigh. An innerspring system with foam at the top, which is usually referred to as a hybrid mattress, will obviously have a larger weight than an all-foam mattress with only three layers of material.

The average weight range for the most mattress is between 50 pounds and 150 pounds. Buying a 150 pounds mattress makes it much more difficult to get your bed set up and to move furniture around, compared to a mattress that weighs a mere 50 pounds. Some mattresses weigh less or more than this average range too.

Here is a breakdown of the most popular mattress sizes and the common weigh ranges you will find:

  • A full-size mattress will generally have a minimum weight of about 50 pounds. Some options, depending on the brand and materials, can weigh up to 60 pounds.
  • When asking how much a queen size mattress weighs, the answer can vary a lot. These mattresses can weigh about 120 pounds when only basic materials are used. When high-density foams are added, along with other unique features, the mattress may weigh up to 160 pounds.
  • A king size mattress can get quite heavy. The minimum weight for most king size mattress is about 130 pounds, but some of these products can weigh up to around 180 pounds.
  • The popular California king size mattress has a very similar weight to a standard king size mattress. Thus, the answer will generally be the same as asking how much does a king size mattress weigh. The range is usually between 130 pounds and 180 pounds.

It is also important to note that the accumulation of certain substances in a mattress may cause it to gain some weight over time.

The Benefits Of Choosing A Lighter Weight Mattress

Many people prefer to choose a mattress with a lighter weight. There are a few reasons why this is something you should consider.

First of all, a lighter mattress is easier to carry into your room and get onto your foundation. It also makes the process of cleaning your room easier, as your bed will not feel too heavy to move around.

Additionally, also consider shipping. When you ship heavy objects, the shipping fees involved may be high. A lighter weight mattress might help to reduce the shipping costs that are charged when you place an order for the mattress.

Conclusion

Your mattress affects how you sleep. It can also have an impact on how you move your furniture and how much effort it takes to clean your room. Learning how much does a mattress weigh can help you get a better idea of how heavy your bed will be. This also tells you how much effort it will take to get the mattress indoors and set it up.

how to break in a new mattress

You need about seven to eight hours of sleep every night. This helps you, as an adult, get enough sleep for all processes that activate during this time to do their job. The mattress you sleep on has an impact on whether you sleep well – or rather toss and turn during the night.

When you buy a new mattress, however, you may find that it is not as comfortable as you initially thought. This is quite normal, as you first need to learn how to break in a new mattress. It takes a while before the mattress will give you the comfort it was made for. In this article, we look at how new mattress break-in works, and how long it will take.

Why Is My Mattress Feeling Harder Than It Did In-Store?

When you visit a mattress shop or display room, you will generally find that laying on top of a mattress in the store feels great. The mattress is soft and comfortable and provides you the exact benefits that the store owner claims.

You decide to proceed with the purchase – but once the mattress arrives at your home, you find that it is hard and not as comfortable as you can remember.

Before you call the manufacturer and start complaining, take note that this is something to be expected.

It takes some time for a new mattress break-in process to complete. When you receive the mattress, everything is still new. You need to sleep on the mattress for a while before it gains the comfort and plush feel that you experienced in the store.

Some mattresses tend to be harder than others when they are delivered. This initial hardness can be alarming – but it should go away as you break the new mattress in.

How To Break In A New Mattress?

You most likely want to know how long it will take to break in the mattress that just arrived at your doorstep. There isn’t a single straightforward answer that will account for every single mattress on the market. Breaking in memory foam mattress is different from breaking in a mattress that features an innerspring system, for example.

Knowing how long it will take to break the mattress starts with identifying the type of mattress you have bought. It can take between 30 days and 90 days for the mattress to reach its full “break-in” spot.

A memory foam mattress may reach its ideal comfort and firmness level sooner than an innerspring system. This is because the foam reacts to the heat of your body. When you sleep on the mattress every night, it will start to take the right shape sooner too.

With an innerspring mattress, the spring or coils used on the inside of the mattress may take longer while to reach the firmness level that will give you the most comfort.

It is important to also consider the mattress firmness option you chose. If you decided to buy a firm mattress, then it shouldn’t take too long to break the new mattress. A softer mattress may require some additional time for it to give you the plush feeling you desire.

How Long Does It Take To Get Used To A New Mattress?

It is important to ask more than just how to break in a new mattress and how long this process takes. You also need to ask how long it takes to get used to a new mattress.

Most people tend to sleep on a mattress for about one decade before they decide to buy a new one. With this in mind, it means you have grown used to how your old mattress felt. When you are used to the sleeping experience on the old mattress, the new one may feel strange to you.

It is simply a new experience that you need to get used to. Most people find that they are able to adapt to the new mattress rather quickly. It should take much less time to get used to the mattress than the actual new mattress break-in time too.

Simply ensure you sleep on the mattress regularly. This will ensure your body gets used to how the mattress feels.

Break-In A Mattress Faster

There are ways to assist the break-in process of a new mattress. At the same time, you do not want to rush this process too much – this may rather end up causing damage to the mattress.

One of the first things you can do is to not sleep on your mattress too soon. Sure, we advised you to sleep on the mattress regularly – but when it only arrives, allow about a day or two for the mattress to fully expand (if you bought a bed-in-a-box solution) and for it to breathe. Air will flow into the mattress when it is not immediately dressed with sheets. Fibers can then expand more thoroughly and become softer faster.

Some people also find that rolling around on top of the mattress helps a little with the break-in process. When you roll on top of the mattress, you may find that the materials start to loosen up. This ensures the mattress can become comfortable and start to conform to your body’s shape faster.

You can also decide to turn the heat setting up in your room for a few days – this can be very helpful in the winter. The heat may help to ensure the materials in the mattress soften at a faster rate.

Conclusion

Buying a new mattress is a valuable investment. It allows you to improve your sleep. Once the mattress arrives, however, it may feel hard and different from the display model. This is not something to be concerned about. You should learn how to break in a new mattress. It takes up to 90 days for the mattress to break-in – during which time there are a few strategies you can use to sleep up the process.
